dynamo london regular contributor, Ross Phillips, has a great new installation in the Super Contemporary exhibition that has just opened at the Design Museum. For this interactive installation, four pods around London take short videos of the heads, bodies or legs of the people standing in front.

It's like those flip books you had as a kid where you could mix and match different body parts from policemen, bakers, firemen etc, only this is with video and it's real people. The website records the people captured to date. Very Ross Phillips. Very cool.

I really like interactive stuff that doesn't need, keyboards, touch screens, or elaborate arrays of expensive displays. This is all good fun.

You'll have to follow the link to see it in detail. But if you're very very quick you still have chance to offer your comments before it's published.

Another simple little online game with impeccable physics simulations. There's not much more to say than that, it's pool, it's online. It's very diverting.

OK, there's no multiplayer mode (which there used to be). OK, there's only one mode of play. OK, the interface is loud and lacks some subtlety.

But its still the best online pool game out there. And probably the best game on Miniclip.

I can't quite remember where i heard about this originally (possibly www.crackunit.com ) but this is the bespoke end of the Boomkat Records online presence.

Basically you get a hand picked selection of records—14 to be precise—usually wrapped around a theme, and usually quite a specific theme such as Berghain House, cover versions, dubstep hybrids etc). In this world of infinite downloads we need people filtering out the wheat from the chaf, in fact we need it now more than ever.

I'm sure there will be people out there who really quite like going into a record shop and speaking to a helpful assistant who points you towards something you might other wise not have heard, 14 Tracks is the nearest digital equivalent.

14 hand picked tracks for about £7 is always going to be worthwhile, of course you take the rough with the smooth, but thats just life.

Interface-wise the website is a handsome thing, and the process of buying (while not as quick as iTunes) is certainly quick and easy, and getting DRM free music is actually quite a key thing.

My only gripe is the width of the site; weighing in at over 1300 pixels wide means that the only widest of wide screens can accommodate without scrolling. We do still live in a 1024px world, and even though i use a Cinema Display most of the time i don't actually like having my browser that wide. Widescreens actually mean more 'different' things at the same time, not more of 'one' thing.

Other than that I really like this service, and since they've offered a download bundle of track the whole thing is rather good

I've been meaning to post this for months. It won at the Design Week Awards this year and is really rather special.

I'm still not too sure what it's all about, as its navigation is quite 'dense' and there is a lot going on, nor am I sure how it links to the broadcast aspect (OK, I haven't spent enough time delving into it), but I love the concept, the dark aesthetic, the implicit reference to Hitchcock's 'Rear Window', the integration of video into the web page, the density of detail...

Sadly I think its no longer 'current' but some exploration will reward on many levels anyway.

By way of introduction, here's what it says about it on the accompanying blog 'The story gets deeper':

"The HBO Voyeur Project is a collection of multi-media stories that HBO has built around the theme of voyeurism.

'See what people do when they think no one is Watching' is the tagline that they have used to describe the experience that starts in the streets of New York City, behind the countless windows that we pass everyday.

It comes together in a silent film that will be projected on the side of a building, and extends to the HBO channel, HBO on Demand, and online at HBOVoyeur.com. There are also “artifacts” of the characters everywhere, pieces of story which have been sprinkled around the web and in the real world to heighten the experience for those who like to get involved."

Take a look...

I seem to be posting a lot of BBC things onto dynamo at the moment, but they are all good so i'm not too worried. I'm not making any money out it either, if thats what you're thinking.

The recently, fully released BBC iPlayer is another one of those online things that justifies the licence fee. Simple, effective and pleasant on the eye (in a typically 2.0 kind of way) there's not much to fault about the iPlayer. OK so the name's a bit trendy, and the buttons around the side are a bit too big, but it works and if you've got a quick connection to the internet its a good way to catch the things you missed.

i suspect it will take some time for this to 'bed in' and hopefully there'll be some kind of download option for Mac users in the future, but not too bad all in all.
