This post is somewhat late, I know, as the UK edition of Wired magazine is already into its second issue.

So, I bought this first issue, remembering the relatively short-lived attempt to launch a dedicated UK edition a decade or so ago, and wondered how this version might be better than that and, more importantly, how it might remain relevant to a UK audience without losing sight of a world perspective. I am delighted to say I read it almost without break from cover to cover, noting in particular some fine pieces from the ever stimulating Russell Davies, whose own blog has been celebrated on this site before, an engaging article which (almost) managed to clarify the reasons for the recent global economic collapse, and a nice insight into the new media policies at the BBC, which in itself satisfies the global vs. local issue for me.

Anyway, I'm giving it an enthusiastic endorsement. Must dash, I've got another issue to read. Long live print... ;-)

We'd like you to rate a project for success in three different areas. Tick looks good if it is aesthetically pleasing, and tick works well if it is technically innovative. Most importantly tick performs effectively if you think it meets all of its professional objectives.

Obviously we don't really expect to see any work submitted that is no good, but you never know.

I'm no girl geek, but I do heart WIRED

I'm a long-time fan of WIRED magazine. Naturally, I'm thrilled that there is a UK version. I'm not sure how the WIRED readership breaks down but I suspect there are more male readers than female. However, having said that, I have always found that WIRED caters perfectly well to my female sensibilities. Never too techie, never 'laddy', never chauvinistic, and never crass. I only hope that the British version can uphold those characteristics. So far so good.

With reference to BBC iPlayer

There has been some talk in the press recently of the BBC considering having to charge for internet services, as they are, of course, available to online viewers other than the UK Licence Fee payers, who have effectively paid for them.

For some time I have wondered why they don't charge for iPlayer access outside of the UK, rather than restricting that service altogether. I frequently spend time in Ireland, which is precisely when I get time to relax and catch up on missed programmes. I'd be happy to pay a modest charge for iPlayer access.
