We live in an increasingly conscientious age, all of our actions have reactions. As designers we should be leading on these issues, not just as a commercial imperative, but as part of a wider change in our approach.

"Three trees is a is a not for profit enterprise set up to help everyone involved in design and advertising to rethink their working cultures and start to produce sustainable creative solutions that really work."

This kind of stuff really needs our support and recognition. It made the Design Week Hot 50 for 2008 (along with dynamo london) so it must be good

We'd like you to rate a project for success in three different areas. Tick looks good if it is aesthetically pleasing, and tick works well if it is technically innovative. Most importantly tick performs effectively if you think it meets all of its professional objectives.

Obviously we don't really expect to see any work submitted that is no good, but you never know.

A big step forwards ...

I met Sophie Thomas last year at the Royal Designer's Summer School (what a lovely lady). I think that this initiative, set up by her, Nat Hunter and Caroline Clark is a really positive step forwards for our design industry.

When we are designing brochures, merchandise, interiors, websites, whatever, we as designers, have a valuable opportunity to present sustainable and ethical options to clients. We should take full advantage of that opportunity.

I'm also proud to point out that Three Trees Don't Make A Forest is an all-female outfit, which are still a relatively rare thing in this field. Go girls!

A great initiative

When I first became interested in working in digital media rather than in print I was fond of telling people that I was "getting out of the waste paper business" as so much of what I was asked to design ended up being thrown away or just left to gather dust on shelves.

I am similarly disturbed at the amount of waste, both of physical resources, and of the problems of power consumption, that working in this new environment generates.

This site has reminded me to re-address my own bad habits and make some more personal changes.
