I love the digital displays at the Ron Arad exhibition, which has just opened at the Barbican Art Gallery. The ethereal images which float across the screens are a beautiful counterpoint the the translucent physicality of the displays themselves, and of course to the rugged elegance of Ron Arad's furniture. They are each made up of a floor to ceiling array of LED panels, and are true 'screens' in that they enclose the spaces in a classic, ecclesiastical manner, yet allow visual information to pass through them. I found they are perhaps best enjoyed from across the other side of the gallery.

I'm sorry but these snaps don't do justice to the installations at all. Go and see for yourselves.

I came across this website while doing some research on diagrams. It's run by the University of Applied Science Postdams' Design Department. This website lets you select the of area information you want to display and shows you options. You can also filter the search by selecting the device your design will appear on.
They also offer a 'fact sheet' on the said graphic they come up with and how to use it.

I haven't looked at it in depth, but it's interesting enough!

For cigar aficionados, the pleasure doesn't end when the ember goes out. This worldwide community takes deep social pleasure in talking about cigars, sharing news and invitations, and especially in discovering rare and high quality brands.

Understanding that, digital studio ClickFire Media fused Twitter and Google Maps to create a first-of-its-kind branded site that publishes real-time tweets from cigar lovers around the world. EPCarrillo.com heralds the December release of a limited edition cigar by renowned cigar-maker Ernesto Perez-Carrillo, and carries the tagline, "Soon, everyone will be talking about one cigar."

The idea to combine Twitter and Google Maps came from E.P. Carrillio's New York-based agency DeVito/Verdi; ClickFire developed and executed the technological solutions.

To create the site's functionality, the team at ClickFire accessed the APIs of Twitter and Google Maps. While a community of developers has sprung up around Google Maps' API, this particular solution scrapes live tweets, selected for key word "cigar," from all Twitter feeds 150 times an hour-the maximum number of requests allowed-then verifies each user's location and filters the messages for relevance. Every five seconds, it publishes a new tweet on a 2D global map, time-stamped GMT; the servers are located in the United Kingdom.

"ClickFire worked with us to create a branded site that connects cigar lovers around the world in real time, and reveals once-in-a-lifetime moments being celebrated with a good cigar, from sealing a business deal to welcoming a new baby," said Tyler DeAngelo, Interactive Creative Director of DeVito/Verdi. "It's reaching everyone."

"We're proud of this solution," said Peter Corbett, ClickFire co-founder and partner. "It brings Google Maps and live Twitter feeds together ina way no other brands have, in a complementary partnership that perfectly supports the much-anticipated launch of an inherently social product: a fine cigar."

There are still some things that only flash can do, and this a perfect example. Sequencer / demo / instrument website for french beatbox The Incredible Polo. Drag and drop loops to build a track. Simple.

Obviously there are loads of similar sites to this out there, many doing a more advanced job, but the charm of the illustration nad animation is what makes this stand out.

It perfectly demonstrates the beatboxer's art, while simulataneously giving us a hint of his style and personality.

Incroyable!

It is no surprise for Creative Review do a piece about the re-design of the National Gallery's website. It is exactly like the kind of print-derived website that so often receives praise in the design press. This site is elegant and restrained (much like the Gallery itself), however some of the navigation and features are SO restrained that you might miss them all together.

Apparently Studio Bureau worked on both the information architecture, and on the design of the site, which is impressive. It is no small task to make over 2,300 paintings viewable online.

A particularly nice feature is the monthly 'Focus Painting'. For example this month's focus is 'Gifts'. We learn that Van Gogh painted one of his sunflowers canvases for the guest bedroom for a friend. I enjoyed using the zoom feature, which allowed me see super-close up views of Van Gogh's canvases. This was v cool but in my opinion, the interface is a bit too discreet, perhaps even anally retentively so.

File this one under 'online tools for web designers'. its a useful resource to help calculate the optimum size for your web designs. It factors in screen sizes and browser borders (or chromes) and gives you a set of sizes and the amount of users you can expect to hit.

Wont be big news to most designers. but it certainly offers some useful stats in terms of browser saturation to quieten down inexperienced clients.

Not tried the firefox plugin. let me know if you have.

OK, I know I was a child of the sixties, and forty years ago I got to stay up late to witness the Eagle landing, so a website dedicated to the Apollo 11 mission to the moon is bound to be of serious interest to me.

That said, this thoroughly comprehensive site is jam packed with animations, video clips, interviews, photos and loads of information about the mission. All relayed in a minute by minute account from start to finish.
